Candelaria Approves New Social and Health Center for Barranco Hondo

On the previous day, the Plenary Session of Candelaria unanimously sanctioned the file for contracting the implementation of the initial phase of the Barranco Hondo social healthcare centre. This project will receive a funding amount of 4,975,276 euros from the Villa Mariana City Council. Following the endorsement from this decision-making body, the City Council will shortly publish the specifications that will govern the bidding for the construction work on the Public Sector Contracting Platform, enabling companies to submit their proposals.

This new resource will offer Candelaria, in this first phase, 62 places for dependent individuals, comprising 42 residential and 20 day centre slots. The mayor of Candelaria, Mari Brito, emphasised the significance of this initiative for the locality: “With this centre, we are addressing a genuine necessity of our elderly residents and their families, providing them with a modern facility tailored to their requirements where they can receive the care and support they deserve.”

The mayor also announced that the local authority will persist in their efforts to expedite the drafting of the second phase of the Barranco Hondo senior centre project.

Mari Brito elucidated that the realisation of this public infrastructure is made possible due to the agreement established between the Candelaria City Council and the Institute of Social and Socio-Healthcare of Tenerife (IASS), an entity subordinate to the Cabildo of Tenerife. The centre will be erected on a plot measuring 5,074 square metres, situated in the Rubén Marichal urbanisation (close to the Autopista del Sur), and forms part of the Social and Healthcare Infrastructure Plan which is co-financed by both the Cabildo of Tenerife and the Government of the Canary Islands.

During the extraordinary session held yesterday, the Plenary Session had earlier approved the withdrawal of the prior contracting file for the senior centre, initiated by decree. This decision aligned with current regulations which stipulate that when it exceeds 10 percent of the municipal budget, the competent contracting authority is the Municipal Plenary Session.

The Barranco Hondo senior or socio-healthcare centre represents the first publicly owned facility to be constructed in Villa Mariana. The announcement made by the local government in August estimated its cost at 5,406,710 euros, a figure that the Cabildo later increased by 631,671 euros due to price adjustments, resulting in a revised budget of 5,606,948.64 euros. “Candelaria is a municipality that is forward-thinking and committed to the welfare of all its residents. By constructing this centre, we are responding to an increasing social demand and reinforcing our dedication to caring for our elderly population,” the mayor asserted at that time.
