The Governing Council of the Cabildo has sanctioned the commission for the public entity Gesplan to manage a comprehensive service covering 14 out of the 20 recreational zones within the network on the Island (which boasts a maximum total capacity of 8,029 seats). This service encompasses tasks related to incident repairs, cleaning, assistance, and the provision of information regarding these areas. The initiative entails an investment of 876,451 euros and is scheduled to run from January 1, 2025, to December 31 of the same year.
Recreational zones are designated spaces established within protected natural environments for the purpose of enjoying meals while being in direct connection with nature, catering to leisure and recreational activities. Consequently, these areas are equipped with stoves, tables, benches, water points, toilets, vehicle parking, and children’s play amenities.
Schools are also permitted to organise activities that focus on educational and environmental objectives. In exceptional cases, different types of activities, such as social, cultural, sporting, political, or religious events, may be conducted there, provided they do not cause harm to the facilities or the natural surroundings and do not impede the general public’s usage of these spaces.
The approved provision will be operational from 9:50 a.m. to 5:50 p.m., seven days a week, in the recreational and camping areas of Las Calderetas (El Sauzal), Chinajiga (Los Realejos), La Tahona (San Juan de la Rambla), Las Raíces (El Rosario), Los Frailes (Arafo), Los Pedregales (Buenavista del Norte), San José de Los Llanos (El Tanque), Llano de los Viejos (La Laguna), La Quebrada (Tegueste), and Chío. This maintenance contract will only be implemented on weekends and holidays in Hoya del Abade (La Victoria de Acentejo), La Lagunilla Chica (Santa Úrsula), and Arenas Negras (Garachico). The areas of El Lagar and Las Hayas, located in Icod de los Vinos, Ramón el Caminero, La Caldera (La Orotava), Lomo la Jara (Tacoronte), and Las Lajas (Adeje) are excluded from this agreement with Gesplan.
Among the recreational zones with the highest capacity on the Island are two that have been omitted from this agreement with Gesplan: La Caldera (825) and Ramón el Caminero (600), both found in La Orotava. Following these are Las Raíces (El Rosario), accommodating 675, and Chío (Guía de Isora), with a capacity of 650. The zone with the least capacity is Llano de los Viejos, offering space for 135 people.
These areas are situated within protected natural spaces including the Corona Forestal Natural Park (11), Las Lagunetas Natural Park (1), Las Lagunetas Protected Landscape (4), Anaga Rural Park (2), Teno Rural Park (1), and Chinyero Special Natural Reserve (1).
The establishment and upkeep of these recreational areas aim to alleviate pressure on the busiest locations, particularly during favourable weather conditions. The Cabildo emphasises the importance of community cooperation to maintain these sites in optimal condition.
While most rest areas are equipped with containers for the sorting and recycling of waste, it is advisable to bring refuse bags to leave the facilities clean. The use of fire is restricted to designated stoves, although factors such as high temperature warnings may affect this. Additionally, fresh water (which is not potable) is a limited resource, thus conscious usage is encouraged.
