Land Acquisition Frenzy in Candelaria: The Race for Housing Opportunities

The Candelaria City Council has initiated the tender process for the acquisition of land located along the coastline of the municipality aimed at constructing publicly promoted housing. The municipal administration of Villa Mariana views it as “a priority to address the housing demands of its citizens,” as stated by the mayor, Mari Brito, who elaborates that “we have allocated 200,000 euros from municipal reserves for this purpose.” The council member encourages ongoing actions in this regard.

Regarding Candelaria, the council member notes that the Consistory has also been awarded a grant of 250,000 euros aimed at housing development under the Cabildo de Tenerife Activa Tierra (+20) programme. In this context, Mari Brito reveals that the local authority is making preparations to announce the respective public tender in the near future, likely focusing on the acquisition of plots situated in the central area.

The land sought by the Candelaria City Council in this tender must be positioned in equipped areas, supplied with essential services and readily accessible. It should be located along the municipality’s coastline and must possess required resources, including cultural, social, health, sports, and educational amenities that ensure beneficiaries have access to necessary provisions for the execution of their daily activities.

The Councillor for Urban Planning, Reinaldo Triviño, emphasizes that the plots should be situated on land designated as consolidated urban, with residential designation. These specifications include that the buildings must conform to a closed typology, whether with or without a front garden, as well as being enclosed in a traditional manner or remaining open.

Moreover, the plots need to be adjacent to at least one paved thoroughfare for public use or exhibit clearance at road level with a variance of no more than 1 metre. These can either be individual plots or a collection of several neighbouring plots, taking into account that the gradients must not exceed 20%, among other requirements.

Interested parties wishing to engage in the tender process initiated by the Candelaria City Council have until Tuesday, December 17, at 11:59 p.m., to submit their proposals. Submissions must be made through the Public Sector Procurement Platform.

According to the stipulations governing this tender, it is possible to acquire one or more plots until reaching the maximum allocated investment of 200,000 euros. Should the value of the selected plot fall short of this amount, the Candelaria City Council retains the option to purchase another plot whose value is equal to or less than the difference up to 200,000 euros, as reported by the municipal administration led by Mari Brito.

In April 2007, the Municipal Corporation at that time initiated a tender for the construction of 70 public housing units located in Amance (eight), La Cardonera (32), and Playa de la Viuda (30). These represent the most recent public housing initiatives undertaken in Villa Mariana since the 1980s.
