Efforts to combat Ulex Europaeus, the scientific term for the species known as Galician gorse or toxo, which is also referred to locally as hawthorn, are underway. According to the noincineraciónTenerife portal, this invasive species has emerged as a significant concern due to its extensive spread and the uncontrolled populations, particularly in the inland areas of the northern region. This situation poses a risk to the native and endemic biodiversity, as well as threatening some protected natural sites. The risk posed by its presence has been exacerbated by recent forest fires, notably the one in 2022, which began in Los Campeches, situated in the highlands of Los Realejos and San Juan de la Rambla, alongside the significant blaze that occurred in the summer of 2023.
