Transforming the Industry: A Three-Year Journey to Circular Economy Excellence

Tenerife Tourism is making progress on its Island Circular Economy Plan aimed at enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of enterprises. The initiative intends to establish a roadmap for the next three years, taking into account the current state of the sector and the Canary Islands’ Circular Economy Strategy. Recently completing its initial phase, which comprises five stages, the project is centred around an earlier assessment of the circular economy within the island’s tourism industry and its implementation by local stakeholders. Updates were presented this week by the Tourism and Natural Environment departments of the Cabildo to an audience of over 30 companies. This plan also encompasses a strategy that provides business guidance and training on circular economy practices.

Financed by the European Union through Next Generation funds, this initiative targets new segments and aims at sector training. It is developed by Global Factor International Consulting, a worldwide entity that specialises in delivering innovative and sustainable solutions across various domains such as climate change, energy, and sustainability. The project is executed in partnership with Ecotouristing, a Tenerife-based firm renowned for its comprehensive experience in project management adhering to the principles of environmental, sociocultural, and economic regeneration and sustainability, maintaining a robust commitment to social responsibility.

Lope Afonso, the Vice President and Tourism Councillor of the Cabildo, emphasised that “this is a journey that not only involves companies and professionals but also necessitates the engagement of citizens to bolster the identity and dedication of Tenerife as a leader in sustainability.” He highlighted that “this is why one of the goals of this strategy includes coordinating a campaign for social awareness.”

The CEO of Tenerife Tourism, Dimple Melwani, stated, “This plan seeks to ensure that the tourism sector of the Island becomes more sustainable, both in terms of environmental impact and social responsibility.” He noted that “many companies in Tenerife are already implementing commendable practices in the circular economy, but we require further advancement.”

In another development, Tenerife showcased its “strengths and innovations” as a destination for conferences and conventions at the IBTM in Barcelona. At this prominent fair, one of the largest in the international sector, the Island also unveiled the imminent launch of the Taoro Hotel and the Puerto de la Cruz Congress Centre, planned for spring 2025. Tenerife Tourism and the Tenerife Convention Bureau (TCB) brand proudly represented the Island’s sector at this prestigious gathering.
