From December 4 to 8, the Deán Palahí alley in the historical centre of San Cristóbal de La Laguna will provide an immersive experience that will whisk visitors back to the 19th century. This initiative is part of the commemorative activities celebrating the 25th anniversary of the city’s designation as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
This narrow passage, linking Plaza del Adelantado with Viana Street, will be transformed into a “Time Tunnel” recreating everyday life in the early 19th century. The environment will feature scenes involving historical figures and traditional trades, illustrating the social and economic vibrancy of the era.
The event will be accessible to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.. Admission will be free, with entry commencing at Plaza del Adelantado. Due to limited capacity, access will be organised in groups to facilitate a smooth journey through the tunnel.
A journey to the 19th century
This re-enactment is set during the period of 1808 to 1814, amidst the Spanish War of Independence. In the Canary Islands, this conflict led to a power vacuum following the departure of key military and civilian leaders to the Peninsula. In this period, the Supreme Board of the Canary Islands was established, led by Alonso de Nava y Grimón, to fulfil governmental roles.
The portrayal will feature characters such as winemakers, gangocheras, basket weavers, and washerwomen, alongside prominent figures of high society, like the Marchioness María del Rosario Pérez de Barradas. The “tacadas” will also be represented, women who covered their faces partially with clothing – a practice that persisted in the town until the mid-19th century.
