The relocation of the Las Chafiras taxi rank in San Miguel de Abona remains unresolved and has ignited a political controversy within the municipality since October 31. This follows a proposal from the Socialist Group, which asserts that the current taxi rank “fails to meet the necessary accessibility and capacity standards.” Positioned next to a service station, it can accommodate only eight vehicles, a situation described by PSOE spokesperson, José Carlos Rodríguez, as “woefully inadequate.”
Consequently, his group suggests establishing an 800 square metre area directly in front of the current site, which would be fitted with canopies and restrooms. “They are going to complete the work and will have to construct upon it, incurring additional costs,” remarks Rodríguez, who also calls on the Urban Planning Councillor to “coordinate with the Government of the Canary Islands regarding the necessary alterations for the land transfer.”
The local governing body, led by Mayor Arturo González (CC), acknowledges the necessity to “identify an alternative.” Meanwhile, the Councillor for Works and Infrastructure, Rafael Alejandro Baute, concedes that “we are unsure of its final location,” adding that “it remains uncertain,” as the land’s availability will depend on the completion of the Las Chafiras industrial estate, which is scheduled for the first half of 2025.
The government also highlights that it is evaluating various options. Furthermore, they assure that “all actions will be undertaken in collaboration with the taxi associations.”
