Yesterday, the Plaza del Cristo de La Laguna transformed into the hub of harmony and celebration for the 28th edition of Neighborhood Day. Organised by the FAV Aguere Federation of Neighbourhood Associations, in collaboration with the Citizen Participation departments of the City Council, the event brought together thousands of participants in a day characterised by a festive atmosphere, heartfelt tributes to three commendable neighbours, and a variety of cultural activities.

The gathering featured robust institutional representation, including the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo; Regional Deputy Councillor Jonathan Domínguez; Cabildo Councillor Blanca Pérez; along with members of the municipal corporation, such as the first Deputy Mayor, Badel Albelo, and the Councillor for Citizen Participation, Fran Hernández.

The programme commenced with a singing workshop led by artist Virginia Guantanamera, followed by performances from the Itamar and Cuevas de Lino parties. The Los Joroperos troupe also illuminated the square with colour and merriment. In the afternoon, well-known artists like Marcela Kauffman, Pepe Benavente, and Luis Deseda took to the stage, culminating in a performance by the group Ni un Pelo de Tonto.

The day concluded with a communal lunch featuring a massive Paella prepared for over 1,500 individuals, including vegan options to cater to the diverse tastes of all guests. Homemade desserts crafted by families in attendance, alongside various stews and dishes, enhanced the culinary experience.

One of the day’s highlights was the emotional tribute to three residents who have devoted their lives to enhancing their community. Francisco Reyes received accolades for his exceptional contributions in the Anaga hamlets; Valeriano Báez Ramos was honoured for his efforts in Los Batanes and the Anaga rural park; and Fernando Hernández García was recognised for his unwavering dedication to the welfare of La Laguna’s residents.

Juan Luis Marín Carvajal, president of FAV Aguere, emphasised that “these recognitions embody the vibrant spirit of the neighbourhood movement, which strives daily to transform our neighbourhoods into spaces of coexistence and progress. They serve as an example of what can be achieved when we unite for the common good.” Likewise, Councillor Fran Hernández commended the work of FAV Aguere and the neighbourhood associations in La Laguna, stating that “their efforts are crucial in building a more supportive municipality.”
