What better way to commence your cultural journey than at the TEA? On Friday the 29th, Saturday the 30th, and Sunday the 1st of December, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., you can explore Óscar Domínguez’s exhibition “The Two Who Cross” at the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA). This exhibition, dedicated to the surrealist artist, is curated by Isidro Hernández and will remain open to the public until November 24.
Starting on Friday at 10:00 a.m., the TEA presents a fresh exhibition and activity programme in the MiniTEA space. The new MiniExpo, named “Without Clothes in the Museum: Why is Art Filled with Naked Figures?”, showcases 19 pieces from the TEA Collection, divided into four themes (A Surface of the Skin, Everything or Nothing, The Perfect Body, Majas, Venus and Odalisques, and The Broken Body) that explore various subjects.
In the same venue, “Here, a Good Man”, the fourth feature by Belgian director and screenwriter Bas Devos, will be screened from Friday the 29th to Sunday the 1st at 7:00 p.m. Winning best film in the Encounters section of the Berlin Film Festival, this film immerses the audience in a simple yet profound narrative about human connection and the beauty of everyday life.
The Central Municipal Library is highlighting the film genre by selecting 28 movies “based on real events,” accompanied by those that offer a personal and subjective interpretation fitting into the artists’ visions. Throughout the weekend, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., the Museum of Nature and Archeology features “Ethology in Stillness,” an installation reflecting the impact of human presence on the planet, set during the confinement period in 2020 due to the pandemic.
This same venue will also host the exhibition “Imeldo Serís. Everything by and for Tenerife.” The exhibition, which will be open to the public until January 24, 2025, shines a light on the figure of Imeldo Serís, renowned for his relentless advocacy as a deputy and senator for his native island.
On Friday, November 29, at 5:00 p.m., a new Animated Comics Workshop will take place at the Central Municipal Library of Santa Cruz. This workshop, an innovative project by Carlos Miranda, a distinguished illustrator, artist, and animator, is organised by the Municipal Library of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and funded by the Government of the Canary Islands under the Canary Islands Reading Plan 2023-2030. Designed for children and young adults aged 7 and over, the workshop introduces animated comics.
This weekend, the MUNA is presenting the interactive exhibition “Cooperators for Life: Pollinators.” This new MUNA exhibition area discusses the significance of pollinators, the reasons behind their decline, and the urgent need for large-scale and local strategies to foster a symbiotic relationship between nature and society while examining the social and environmental costs associated with developing a model reliant on limited natural resources.
The Cultural Space of the CajaCanarias Foundation is currently hosting “Images-Words: Photographs by Carlos A. Schwartz,” available for viewing from Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. until January 4, featuring 160 photographs.
This weekend, you can also attend the exhibition organised by the la Caixa Foundation titled “Nikola Tesla: The Genius of Modern Electricity”, located within two tents on Francisco La Roche Avenue until January 7. The exhibition offers a journey through the life and works of the inventor and is accessible Monday to Friday from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m., and from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. On weekends and holidays, hours are set from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Special hours will be in effect from December 23, with openings from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., while weekend times remain unchanged. It will close early on December 24 and 31, and be closed on December 25 and January 1.
At the Art Room of García Sanabria Park, you can explore the contemporary art exhibition Nobody’s Heart: 100 Unphotographed Memories by the Cuban-Canarian artist Eilyn Amores, which is on display until December 15.
Carnival is a constant in Santa Cruz, and what better venue to experience it than the Casa del Carnaval, which showcases three exhibitions dedicated to our carnivals. The first, titled “The Magic Behind the Costume,” focuses on the Costume Contest, highlighting its evolution through two examples: Miguel Ángel Delgado Salas, acclaimed for his numerous awards in the individual costume contest, and the group Los Ilusionistas del Carnaval, representing the group costume contest. This exhibition can be visited in the Multipurpose Room from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Another exhibition, “Lírica y Tradición,” caters to the rondallas and lyrical groups, giving attendees a chance to delve into the history and development of these ensembles while witnessing some of the current competitive fantasies. This can also be seen in the Suspi Room alongside the previous exhibition.
Finally, the ongoing exhibit “2024 Carnival Prize Winners” presents the costumes and creative pieces from groups, collectives, and queens of Carnival 2024, showcasing the fantasies of the three Carnival Queens, as well as those from murgas and choreographic works that received accolades in 2024. Notably, it features documentary elements owned by the late Nicolás Mingorance, a prominent lyricist of the Afilarmónica Ni Fú Ni Fá. This exhibition can be explored on Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The Santa Cruz Carnival House has added two new temporary exhibitions, accessible for free from Monday to Sunday between 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. These exhibitions pay tribute to two iconic elements of our carnival, including “Between Laughter and Parties,” centred on the Laughter Song contest, and “With Clowns and Harlequins: From the Beginning to the Confines,” which honours the well-known Afilarmónica Nifú Nifá.
