The regional deputy and mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez (CC), has submitted three amendments on behalf of the Canarian Nationalist Group to the Budgets for the Autonomous Community of 2025, which he described as “crucial for the Chicharrero municipality,” as he remarked yesterday.

These amendments, characterised by their strong social orientation, are designed to “enhance the lives of the residents in various neighbourhoods, as they are centred around social and socio-health care for the populace of the capital, aligning with the municipal budgets of this year, which primarily focus on individuals.”

The first amendment, aimed at the Canarian Health Service of the Ministry of Health, pertains to the establishment of the La Gallega health centre, which will offer primary care services to the local population in this area. “This initiative aligns with our efforts to advance all towns and neighbourhoods in the Southwest of the municipality,” detailed Bermúdez, who added that “we have allocated a sum of 200,000 euros through this amendment to help initiate the project.”

The other two amendments submitted are directed towards the Ministry of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children, and Families. The first relates to the organisation of the so-called Inclusive Carnival, for which a funding request of 30,000 euros has been made through the Budgets of the Autonomous Community for 2025.

Bermúdez stated, “We are committed to people; it is our duty to serve all groups and ensure that everyone can enjoy leisure activities on equal footing with the rest of the community, which is why it is essential for the Government, through Social Welfare, to take part.”

The activities of the Inclusive Carnival, which are fully accessible, were successfully showcased in 2024, allowing thousands to partake regardless of their abilities. They transformed several key events of the Santa Cruz Carnival into venues for inclusion, information, and support, aided by the establishment of Orange Points.

Additionally, an amendment of 83,000 euros has been proposed for the Family Respite programme in partnership with Santa Cruz and the Red Cross City Council, aimed at improving access to socio-educational, sports, and leisure activities. This initiative seeks to prevent isolation and foster confidence in personal autonomy and integration into the community for both people with disabilities and older individuals with limited mobility.

According to the mayor of Santa Cruz, “it is our responsibility as institutions to support those who provide care, and this programme, in collaboration with the Red Cross, enables caregivers to have a much-needed respite, thereby enhancing their quality of life as well as that of the individuals under their care.”
