The traditional Nativity Scene in Candelaria has been accessible to the public since last Thursday evening, coinciding with the inauguration of the municipal Christmas lighting. The grand tree, standing over 13 metres tall in the Plaza Patrona de Canarias, serves as the focal point. This artwork embodies the essence of Villa Mariana, featuring iconic buildings and areas of the municipality, and is dedicated this year to the island of La Palma.
The base of the nativity scene is adorned with ash from the Cumbre Vieja volcano, which erupted on September 19, 2021. It’s important to note that, in a nod to palm tree traditions, a group of dwarfs from La Palma will join the Virgin of Las Nieves in the pilgrimage-offering to the Patroness of the Canary Islands.
The nativity display has been enhanced with 30 new figures (both moving and stationary) and a variety of decorative elements. New structures featured include the hermitage of San Juanito in Playa de la Viuda, the ancient well belonging to the Virgin, the castle of San Pedro, and the Santiago battery. Additionally, this year unveils a new portal.
The Councillor for Public Works and Services, Jorge Baute, stated, “The municipal Nativity Scene is a creation filled with love that mirrors the identity of our municipality.” He also expressed gratitude towards all the workers involved in the installation of the Christmas illuminations and decorations, particularly acknowledging local resident Alfredo Arencibia for his dedication and hard work on the nativity scene, which is one of the most frequented on the island of Tenerife during the festive season.
This year, as in prior years, a charitable mailbox will be set up, collecting donations that will be entirely allocated to Cáritas Valencia, aimed at assisting families affected by the flood on October 29.
