Canary Islands Hosts Virtual Gathering for 41 Schools on Autism Spectrum Education

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 19 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of the Canary Islands is hosting this Thursday at 4:00 p.m. the inaugural virtual regional assembly on students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which will unite a total of 41 educational establishments on the islands and 123 educators.

This initiative, advocated by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity, and Sport of the Government of the Canary Islands, seeks to strengthen inclusive teaching strategies and provide practical resources for the support of these students.

From the General Directorate of Educational Planning, Inclusion, and Innovation, coordinated by David Pablos, this forum has been created to promote an educational model founded on fairness, participation, and academic success for all learners, particularly those with specific educational support needs (NEAE).

This virtual platform will enable educators to exchange experiences, investigate innovative resources, and deepen their understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to ensure an inclusive educational response, as noted by the Ministry in a statement.

“Our role as a consultative body is to equip both the institutions and their educators with the essential tools to address the diversity of our students, and with this aim, this meeting was established,” David Pablos remarked regarding this event, adding that “it not only benefits students with ASD but also bolsters our efforts to further advance inclusion across all educational levels.”

The significant rise in the identification of students diagnosed with ASD in the Canary Islands, aligning with the data released by the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training of the Government of Spain over the past decade, underscores the necessity for initiatives such as this assembly. This forms part of the need to encourage coordinated strategies with educational establishments to organise and execute methodological proposals aimed at effectively supporting these students, as emphasised by the Executive.

This inaugural regional assembly signifies a “new milestone,” according to the Ministry, in the Canarian Executive’s commitment to educational inclusion, establishing a collaborative learning network among institutions and laying the groundwork for practices that enhance equal opportunities and the holistic development of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
