Luciano Reverón Reverón, the former mayor of the municipality of Arona from 1979 to 1980 and the first democratically elected councillor during the Transition, passed away yesterday at the age of 82, as confirmed by the southern city council. His funeral will be held this afternoon, commencing at 4:00 p.m., from the Memora Tenerife Sur funeral home in Parque La Reina, proceeding to the municipal cemetery of Arona.

The contributions of Don Chano Reverón, as he was affectionately known, were significant during a time when the southern part of Tenerife, particularly the municipality of Arona, was beginning to establish the groundwork for tourism development, which was crucial for the region’s economic growth. The investment dedication from the Puig family was fundamental in both Arona and Adeje.

Luciano Reverón, after a fruitful stint as an engineer in Venezuela, was instrumental in the establishment of extensive public lighting networks, and his commitment to enhancing public infrastructure extended beyond his own municipality.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Arona City Council expressed its condolences over the loss of its first mayor in the post-Franco era, representing the Democratic Centre Union (UCD). They conveyed their sorrow at the passing of Luciano Reverón, “who served as mayor from 1979 to 1980, making him the first popularly elected councillor following the advent of democracy in Spain. May he rest in peace.”

In an article published yesterday in the online newspaper El Sol del Sur, his cousin Juan Francisco Reverón Villalba described him as “a man greatly cherished by the people of Arona and the South. His integrity, enthusiasm, and industrious spirit made him an icon at every gathering.” He also noted his nature as a “natural leader.” “Everyone held him in high esteem and regarded him as a true friend. His interpersonal skills enabled him to become one of the most popular mayors in Spain during the democratic period, and he was the first mayor of democracy in Arona, a position he attained filled with love for his community.”
