The Cabildo of Tenerife will convene this Wednesday during the fourth ‘Drought Table’ meeting to prolong the declaration of a water emergency until February 28 next year. This measure aims to secure emergency interventions that ensure water availability for the primary sector.
This announcement was made by the president, Rosa Dávila, during a press conference to outline the agreements reached by the Government Council. She also highlighted that an additional €3 million will be allocated to the hydraulic infrastructure plan, bringing the total investment to €13.5 million.
The new funding will primarily focus on six water purification facilities located in the Eastern, Western, and Southern regions.
The president expressed her hope for enhanced “effectiveness” of the initiatives over the upcoming months, noting that nearly all of the 75 measures included in the water emergency declaration have already been executed, with the exception of restrictions, which have not been deemed necessary.
Nonetheless, she acknowledged that the situation on the island remains “critical” due to insufficient rainfall, underscoring the need to extend the emergency to provide more water to farmers.
“We cannot simply wait for rain, and the existing flow is still very challenging; it is not expected to improve, and the decree serves to ensure water supply for agriculture,” she remarked.
