The State Coastal Demarcation has mandated the Garachico City Council to dismantle the kiosk situated at the Risco Partido viewpoint, as it falls within the public maritime-terrestrial domain; this is the area to which the sea can extend during high tide. The current administration “was not aware” of this situation, “as no one had previously alerted us,” stated the mayor, José Heriberto González (CC), during an interview with this publication, who became informed after receiving a report from the state department.

Since that time, following the conclusion of the bidding process for the kiosk, the council has begun to take actions aimed at rectifying the situation. Specifically, they put forward an argument claiming that it is virtually impossible for the sea to reach such a significant height, nearly 20 metres above.

In close proximity, just a few metres away, stands the Monument to the Canarian Emigrant, created by the sculptor and poet Fernando García Ramos, who fashioned a human figure in bronze, standing two metres tall, accompanied by a plaque referencing emigration. Fortunately, this monument is exempt from the maritime-terrestrial delimitation.

González recalls that a few years prior, a similar demolition notice was received regarding the pumping station positioned adjacent to the municipal swimming pool, which was established even before the kiosk. Some parts of it were within a public domain area; however, in this case, it was not impacted due to its classification as essential infrastructure and the “disproportionate” expense associated with constructing an alternative a few metres higher.
