Canary Islands Seek EU Approval to Regulate Foreign Housing Purchases

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 12 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Minister for Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, Pablo Rodríguez, has declared in a parliamentary session that his department is developing a Canary Islands agenda in Brussels aimed at securing an assessment, by European institutions, of a specific exceptionality for the Canary Islands that would permit the restriction of property transactions involving foreign buyers on the islands.

In this regard, Pablo Rodríguez emphasised that the Government of the Canary Islands “has a clear objective,” which is to establish all possible mechanisms to ensure that access to housing for residents is guaranteed and remains unaffected by dynamics that do not reflect our social and economic reality, while simultaneously safeguarding the environment from external influences that could impact the housing market and overall living standards in the Canary Islands.”

Furthermore, the minister pointed out that although this proposal presents intricate legal challenges, given that community legislation upholds fundamental principles such as the right to free residence within the territories of Member States and the right to economic diversification, both enshrined in the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, “it is essential that we develop a solution compatible with these principles, which respects the European framework and, at the same time, enables us to implement specific measures to mitigate the pressures on our property market.”
