SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Dec. 7 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Technological and Renewable Energies Institute (ITER), an entity dependent on the Area of Roads, Mobility, Innovation and Culture of the Cabildo de Tenerife, has carried out the installation of a public lighting system based on photovoltaic solar energy in the Senegalese municipality of Dangalma.
The First Vice President and Minister of Innovation, Enrique Arriaga, highlights in a note that “projects like this endorse the great work that is carried out in centers dependent on the island corporation such as ITER that carry out cooperation and technological development work, on a regular basis, with different countries “.
To this he adds that “Tenerife has become a benchmark for renewable energy research through and as a bridge for the exchange of cooperation projects with various West African countries”.
The CEO of Foreign Action, Liskel Álvarez, has indicated that “the Cabildo seeks to promote international relations with other territories in search of an exchange that produces reciprocal benefits of various kinds, such as humanitarian, social, cultural or economic development.”
In addition, he pointed out that “the Cabildo de Tenerife has been promoting for several years, projects that place Tenerife as a benchmark in various sectors and competencies, including renewable energies, reinforcing its external image with the consequent synergy on companies and institutions. of the island for the export of goods and services “.
In this line of action, he commented, “we seek to promote international relations with other territories in search of an exchange that produces reciprocal benefits of diverse nature, such as humanitarian, social, cultural or economic development, and for which they are developed, among others, direct cooperation actions, among which are the projects undertaken by the corporation’s investee companies “.
Specifically, ITER has installed the 23 solar street lights contemplated in the project launched by the Cabildo de Tenerife, through the delegated area of External Action, to evaluate the operating conditions of a public lighting system applying photovoltaic technology in communities rural Senegal.
Thanks to this project, it has been possible to satisfy the lighting needs of the main road that runs through the community of Dangalma.
This road already had a part of lighting by solar street lamps, which were installed in the framework of phase I of the project, and thanks to the execution of phase II, it has been possible to illuminate the entire road in the section that it runs through the village.
50,000 EUROS PROJECT
Furthermore, the project is making it possible to evaluate the behavior of the systems used in both phases, having as the main differentiating element the accumulation elements used in each lamppost. In Phase I lead acid batteries (GEL type) were used, while in Phase II lithium technology has been implemented.
The impact on the quality of life of residents has been remarkable, since this road is characterized by intensive use with the presence of a lot of road traffic and freight transport, highlighted from the Cabildo.
Given that there was no contribution of artificial lighting at night, the development of the two phases of the project has considerably improved the quality of life of local personnel as well as the safety of pedestrians and drivers.
The project of ‘Evaluation of operating conditions of a public lighting system applying photovoltaic technology through its implementation in Rural Communities of Senegal (Phase II)’ has been co-financed by the Cabildo of Tenerife through a specific contribution worth 50,000 euros.
