The Commerce Department of the City Council of La Laguna has revealed the return of the Trade Voucher initiative in the second half of January and early February. This initiative aims to enhance commercial activity during a period when sales usually decline following the festive season.

The area’s mayor, Estefanía Díaz, stated that “this is a strategic choice which has been underpinned by a market analysis conducted earlier this year, with the sector itself indicating that the impact of the voucher would be more significant on dates outside of the usual sale periods.”

“The research was developed in conjunction with the Federation of Urban Areas of the Canary Islands (FAUCA) and involved consumer specialists, who thoroughly examined consumer purchasing patterns and sales flows in local shops and businesses,” the mayor explained, adding that the aim of this initiative “is to ensure that local vendors can continue to offer their goods and services during these periods when customer traffic is lower,” she noted.

Iván Pérez, president of La Laguna Zona Comercial (LLZC), mentioned that this campaign originated to aid the sector amid the crisis induced by Covid-19. Since then, various new vouchers have been introduced, such as the Archipelago Vouchers, initiated by the Government of the Canary Islands, and the Tenerife Vouchers, promoted by the Island Council, amongst others. “This measure aims to provide greater stability for merchants, allowing them not to rely exclusively on peak demand seasons,” he remarked.

Pérez also indicated that further initiatives are being assessed to encourage consumption, alongside considering additional dates for future Trade Voucher campaigns. “This is part of a broader strategy that we are developing between the public and private sectors to enhance consumption planning within the municipality and sustain purchasing activity throughout the year,” he highlighted.

From the Federation of Urban Areas of the Canary Islands (FAUCA), president Abbas Moujir stated, “We regard the Trade Voucher initiative as an additional tool among the various campaigns aimed at supporting local businesses in La Laguna, carried out by the different divisions of the City Council. The vouchers are tailored to meet the sector’s needs, as determined by business owners based on the surveys conducted.”

Additionally, the FAUCA president emphasised his support for the LLZC and the Commerce Department of La Laguna City Council in all their efforts for the benefit of local enterprises, highlighting that “vouchers are an essential component of these initiatives to further strengthen and invigorate commercial activities within the municipality.”
