La Orotava now boasts the finest barraquito and zaperoco in the locality after the successful conclusion of the inaugural Gastronomic Contest ‘My Barraquito or Your Zaperoco’, which saw ‘Sweet Sunset’, from the El Rincón del Pan Cafeteria, crowned as the best barraquito, while ‘Vegaroco’, from Café Breslau was recognised as the standout zaperoco.
The competition, held from 15th September to 15th October, attracted 1,749 participants who cast their votes for their preferred coffees from thirty local establishments, culminating in over 2,000 beverages sold throughout the month.
In this contest, the second place in the barraquitos category went to ‘Barraquito Helado’ from Boutique Relieve, with ‘Barraquito Fénix’ from Cafetería Fénix securing third place.
The winning zaperocos also included ‘Especial Nivaria’, from Churrería Nivaria, in second place, followed by ‘Zaperoco Liceo’, from the Cafetería Liceo de Taoro, in third position.
Organised by the Commerce Department of the La Orotava City Council, under the stewardship of Deisy Ramos, the event not only celebrated local talent in crafting these Canarian specialities but also fostered commerce and tourism in the region.
Moreover, participants were able to cast their votes via an application, providing them with the chance to win a stay for two at the Parador of Teide National Park.
The award presentation, which took place in the prestigious hall of the La Orotava town hall, was attended by local dignitaries, including the mayor and the Councilor for Commerce, who expressed gratitude for the positive response to this initiative, marking a significant milestone in the culinary landscape of the Canary Islands.
