Bermúdez Calls for Endesa to Provide Clear Answers on Dog’s Death

The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, yesterday called on those in charge of Endesa to clarify “explicitly” the circumstances surrounding the death of a dog that occurred on Tuesday after it stepped on an electric box while out for a walk with its owner on San Vicente Ferrer Street. “We are discussing a living creature that has perished and this warrants more than a mere press statement; therefore, we request a comprehensive report, first for the owner and, second, for the local authority that wishes to understand what transpired.”

Bermúdez pointed out that if this is a malfunction, “it needs immediate rectification, especially if similar issues have been identified elsewhere in the city, yet thus far, no representative from the company has reached out to the lady, which I find regrettable and reflects poorly on Endesa’s Corporate Social Responsibility.”

The councillor asserted that Endesa is accountable for the upkeep of the electrical networks operating within the municipality, “so we demand an urgent inspection of all of these facilities following this incident.” He also mentioned that he has contacted the pet owner, offering legal guidance should she wish to pursue action against the company for “this situation arising from what appears to be insufficient maintenance of these facilities within the city.”

On its part, Endesa opted not to comment further on the issue beyond its previous statement, where it noted that it had no evidence indicating that the animal had died from electrocution. “The autopsy will be crucial,” the company added. Nevertheless, it is the owner who must cover the cost of the anatomical examination.
