Tragic Incident: Dog Electrocuted on Santa Cruz de Tenerife Street

On Tuesday, a dog tragically lost its life after being electrocuted while walking over an electrical company cover on the pavement of San Vicente Ferrer Street. The pet had been taken out by its owner when it suddenly disappeared, prompting her to call 092. The Local Police swiftly informed CETRA-Cecopal to find someone responsible, report the incident, and request the presence of technical staff at the location.

The first officers who arrived at the site confirmed the animal’s death and observed that smoke was emanating from the manhole cover.

In accordance with procedure, the dog’s owner and several witnesses were identified, while staff from the electrical company arrived and began managing the situation, leading to the area being cordoned off.

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has called for Endesa to urgently inspect the electrical networks within the ground, following the incident where a dog was electrocuted on Tuesday after stepping onto a manhole cover on San Vicente Ferrer Street.

In an official statement, the City Council has insisted that the electricity provider clarify to the public regarding the circumstances of this incident, as the upkeep of these facilities falls solely on Endesa.

In this context, the mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, has demanded “an immediate resolution to this situation, which appears to stem from the inadequate maintenance of these facilities that lie beneath our city.”

“The safety of our residents and their pets, as seen in this unfortunate case, takes precedence over any justifications that may be put forth by Endesa; hence we urge a prompt review of all aforementioned facilities,” the mayor added.

Carlos Tarife, the Councilor for Animal Welfare, expressed his sorrow over the loss of the pet and echoed the mayor’s call for explanations from Endesa regarding the incident, as well as “the immediate examination of the facilities.”

Meanwhile, district councillor Purificación Dávila has expressed her condolences for the animal’s death and extended her support to its owner during this difficult time.
