SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 26th October (EUROPA PRESS) –

The former president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Carlos Alonso, alongside the mayor of El Rosario, Escolásico Gil, inaugurated the commemorative plaque for the newly renamed House of Culture as ‘Carlos E. Alonso Rodríguez’ during an official event that emphasised the importance of fostering harmony and ethics in politics.

Dignitaries from various political affiliations showed their support for the former island president, who served from 2015 to 2019, reflecting on the journey towards the “utopia” articulated in Carlos Alonso’s address. He expressed great emotion, particularly when mentioning his wife Ana and his children, and took immense pride in “seizing opportunities through hard work, and being generous in the quest for self-improvement.” Carlos Alonso characterised his tenure in public administration as an endeavour to create “a better island, one with more opportunities, an educational island that promotes the pursuit of knowledge, creativity, innovation, education, and entrepreneurship.” “That was my utopia, to which I dedicated the majority of my efforts throughout many years of public service,” he asserted.

The mayor of El Rosario highlighted Carlos Alonso’s pivotal role in the advancements seen in recent years within the municipality: “During his tenure, several of the main projects, which had long been deferred, came to fruition thanks to Carlos; he swiftly grasped and embraced an ambitious vision for the future of El Rosario.”

Additionally, the tribute served as a clarion call to eliminate unwarranted judicialisation as a political weapon, a tactic experienced by both Gil and Alonso during their respective terms in public office. “We cannot allow more excuses; there are no shortcuts to adopting an ethical position in rivalry and opposition. An ethics that prevents the promotion of baseless allegations, that nurtures empathy in the interactions between parties and public officials, just as we foster in our personal lives,” said Gil.

The audience included notable figures such as the president of the National Court, José Ramón Navarro; the president of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo; the mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez; the CEO of Gesplan, Miguel Ángel Pérez; and the former vice president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Aurelio Abreu, along with other noteworthy personalities from the social and cultural milieu of El Rosario.

During the proceedings, there was also a review of the investments initiated during Alonso’s leadership in the Cabildo, which included the refurbishment of the La Campana industrial estate, the revitalisation of the Tabaiba puddle, enhancements to El Sol street, the construction of the Tabaiba II water plant, and the renovation of the La Esperanza sports centre, among others. The El Rosario House of Culture stands as another of those investments realised during Carlos Alonso’s presidency at the Cabildo.

The event concluded with the presentation of a commemorative metope and an institutional token to Carlos Alonso, alongside a musical performance by the group Aborá Cel, performing in trio format.
