El Hierro’s Alpidio Armas Rejects Forestry Fund Due to High Fuel Costs

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 24 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the Cabildo of El Hierro, Alpidio Armas, has dismissed the possibility of implementing the forest cent on the island, asserting that the residents of El Hierro “cannot be held responsible for paying two cents more on an island that already has the highest fuel prices in the entire Canary Islands.”

In comments made to COPE Canarias, Alpidio Armas stated that he would be in favour if a portion of the tax revenue already collected by the Cabildo were allocated to forestry and environmental initiatives. However, he believes it is essential to examine “the fine print” because “what we are not prepared to support under any circumstances is an increase in that tax,” he emphasised.

The island’s president expressed his disapproval of the notion of hiking fuel prices for the inhabitants of El Hierro. Additionally, he views this as a “contradictory” action to the 20 cent bonus, which has also been endorsed by the Government of the Canary Islands: “It is illogical to approve the 20 cent bonus and then subsequently raise fuel prices by an additional two cents.”
