From politics to study

After requesting it without success on several occasions, Assembly for La Orotava takes action and decides to turn its headquarters into a space for local students to train at any time of the day. Between December 23, 2021 and February 8, 2022, textbooks, diagrams, and notes will replace electoral posters, motions, and plenary questions.

Assembly for La Orotava, a municipal formation that has two councilors in opposition to the Orotavense Consistory, will temporarily transform its premises, located on Avenida La Torrita number 70, into a study room open 24 hours for university students between December 23, 2021 and February 8, 2022. To reserve a place, they ask interested persons to get in touch through a message from WhatsApp or Telegram at 620127056 or through any of the party’s social networks.

Assembly has decided to take action to offer the villeros students what they consider an unmet need. «Other municipalities in the North, such as La Matanza, Los Realejos or Puerto de La Cruz, already have study rooms that relieve the pressure of capacity in municipal public libraries. The University of La Laguna (ULL) had 787 students from La Orotava in 2018, being the third municipality, only behind Santa Cruz and La Laguna, which contributed the most students to the institution ”, they recall.

“The students from La Orotava who will return to their municipality during the holiday period deserve a place where they can study at their own pace, at any time of the day, for such demanding and important exams for their future,” Assembly emphasizes, recalling, in addition, that «during 2019 a group of young people from the municipality tried to seek the commitment of the La Orotava City Council for the creation of a study room. An effort that was cut short by the pandemic.

Even though the Municipal Library of La Orotava It has an extended exam period, the Assembly considers that this measure “does not cover the real needs of the university student body of La Orotava. Libraries are not, or should not be, exclusive spaces for study, but rather for the dissemination and promotion of reading, culture and knowledge in general, a space that must be noisy at times. All day long in exam period, the library collapses. ‘

“Students reserve places by leaving their study material on the seats, and the reality of a college student is studying until the wee hours of the morning, not just until 11pm. There are many lucky people who can study at home, but others have a very different family reality. They have to leave home to find the necessary concentration and suffer the anxiety of whether or not they find a place in the library or of having to travel to other municipalities. These youth who study at the university need all the possible support, “they conclude.
