Cabildo Signals Trouble for CD Tenerife’s Sponsorship if They Face Relegation

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 23 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Lope Afonso, the vice president and tourism advisor of the Cabildo de Tenerife, cautioned the CD Tenerife board this Wednesday that if the club were to be relegated, it would be “extremely challenging” to uphold the current sponsorship agreement.

During a press briefing to discuss the decisions made by the Government Council, he stated that such agreements involve “consideration” and do not amount to a “blank cheque”, as they come with benefits that the island gains in return for public resource allocation.

He emphasised that “the cause of potential degradation of this sponsorship deal hinges on the club’s competitive status, which is where we wish for all current institutional efforts and information to be concentrated.”

Furthermore, he reiterated that the Cabildo “earnestly” hopes for the team’s continuation in the Second Division, enabling it to “redirect” its performance for “the satisfaction of all fans of Tenerife.”

Similarly, President Rosa Dávila expressed that the Cabildo “will never undertake anything detrimental to” Club Deportivo Tenerife.

“The individual who has proven to be a detriment to the club both reputationally and in athletic terms is its principal shareholder – José Miguel Garrido – who is likely the one Mr. Pozas – the general director – is echoing,” he pointed out, referencing recent public statements in which there was no expectation of a change in ownership and cautioned about the repercussions of a potential withdrawal of sponsorship.
