Since yesterday, the Plaza de La Concepción in La Laguna has been the venue for the XI Crafts Exhibition, which this year presents a diverse assortment of handmade crafts. The Councillor for Local Development of the Lagunero City Council, Domingo Galván, welcomed the artisans and craftswomen, touring the 39 exhibitors featured in this year’s showcase.

The fair will continue throughout this weekend. Therefore, today both visitors and residents can explore the artisan trades from 11:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and tomorrow, Sunday, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Among the showcased specialties are modelling, enamelling, patchwork, leatherwork, dressmaking, traditional attire, printing and engraving, ceramics, candle-making, jewellery, doll crafting, linen weaving, rosettes, and textile decoration. The tradition of woodturning is also highlighted, providing the public with the chance to learn techniques and skills to transform wood.

A prime location

Domingo Galván noted the significant turnout of the public observed from early in the morning. Furthermore, “its prime location in the historic centre will encourage a substantial influx of visitors, creating a lively atmosphere where they can showcase their creations to a broad and varied audience, both local and tourists,” he remarked. “This is the third crafts fair we have organised in the municipality this year, yet undoubtedly, today’s is the oldest and most eagerly anticipated,” stated the municipal representative, encouraging locals and visitors to seize these three days of festivities “to visit and experience these crafts first-hand, which have been handed down through generations, and in some cases, are at risk of vanishing.” “Each piece is one-of-a-kind, featuring designs that reflect both traditional and contemporary techniques,” the mayor emphasised in this context.

Domingo Galván also underscored the potential of artisan work as a market opportunity for emerging talents and the youth, “providing a professional pathway that merges creativity, sustainability, and respect for our heritage.”
