The Cabildo of Tenerife has announced in the Official Gazette of the Province the criteria for granting scholarships for students attending early childhood education centres for children up to 3 years old. It is estimated that around 6,000 families will benefit, with a maximum award of 800 euros for each scholarship.
According to projections made by the Cabildo of Tenerife, the financial aid, referred to as the “daycare voucher,” is designed to assist in balancing family and professional life.
“We aim for the parents in Tenerife to raise their children with reduced financial concerns, enabling them to progress in their careers while their offspring are cared for properly,” stated Rosa Dávila, the president of the Cabildo.
She also emphasised the importance of this aid in fostering gender equality, noting that 73% of the leave taken in 2023 for caregiving purposes was requested by women.
“It is crucial that the Cabildo continues to support families and, in particular, women, who predominantly take time off work to care for their children or relatives,” Dávila remarked, highlighting that this type of unpaid leave has surged by 22.5% in the Canary Islands over just a year.
According to the announcement, the Tenerife Cabildo has established the “most ambitious and generous” scholarship programme in Spain, achieving “a historic milestone” for both the Canary Islands and the entire country.
In relation to this, it mentions that for the 2024-2025 academic year, the island municipality has allocated 13 million euros, marking the highest investment in scholarships in its history and the most significant among all local authorities nationwide.
For the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year, over 7,000 scholarships will be awarded from this 13 million euros allocation.
