Floodwaters Swamp Punta Brava’s Sewers: A Battle with Nature

The downpour on Saturday evening caused the drains on Tegueste Street in Punta Brava to overflow, regardless of the fact that the environmental improvement project for this road concluded in July, executed by the Urban Planning Consortium for the Tourist Rehabilitation of Puerto de la Cruz, which includes the Cabildo, the Government of the Canary Islands, and the local council.

This information was relayed to this newspaper by Tania Hernández, the president of the Stop Vertidos platform, who noted that the sewage overflow affected several residences, with one home particularly impacted. “It was situated at the end of the pathway, on a slope, with a tank directly in front. The water reached the occupant nearly up to his knees, emanating from both the shower drain and the toilet,” she explained.

Nevertheless, the Councilor for General Services, Alonso Acevedo, stressed that “immediate action was taken, and the following day the damaged belongings were removed and replacements were provided.”

According to residents, the issue arose because the wastewater was not segregated from the rainwater during the construction work, despite this being outlined in the regulations. Evidence emerged, as stones, sand remnants, and numerous hygienic wipes were extracted from the sewers.

David Hernández, the Councilor for Sustainable City, expressed his hope of receiving a report from the concessionaire company Aqualia to evaluate the incident and hold the company accountable if it is confirmed that an error occurred during the work.
