The Granadilla de Abona City Council has announced the temporary closure of El Médano’s central beach due to elevated levels of enterococci surpassing the legal limit.
Moreover, a red flag has been hoisted to signal the temporary prohibition of swimming, as stated in the council’s announcement, which highlights that the detected enterococci levels slightly exceed the maximum permissible threshold.
While prior water quality samples from recent weeks indicated satisfactory conditions, the results received today, Tuesday, showed that enterococci levels were “just over” the allowed parameter.
The council further indicated that on Tuesday, they coordinated a counter-analysis with the specialised laboratory responsible for these assessments, resulting in the decision to temporarily close the central beach to ensure the safety of bathers. The beach will be reopened once it is confirmed that the waters are safe for swimming.
Additionally, the council advises adhering to the guidance provided by the beach rescue and safety team.
