Management of the Natural Environment and Security gives away specimens of the Canary Island faya (Myrica faya) until the next day 17 to those who come to the La Tahonilla Environmental Center. The reason is the recent celebration of Canarian Tree Day.
Minister Isabel García values that “we want to help spread a message to be aware of its importance and get involved in its conservation.” This year, specimens of this medium-sized, highly branched and evergreen tree will be distributed free of charge. It is present in the potential domains of Monteverde, mixed pine forest and humid areas of thermophilic forest. It is found naturally in the Canary Islands without being endemic.
It is one of the most widely used forest species, from which rods are obtained for crops, tool handles and implements for farming. Formerly, its wood was used to make furniture.
