Strengthening Collaboration: Enhanced Police Operations in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Councillor for Security at Santa Cruz City Council, Gladis de León, facilitated a meeting last Tuesday between the leaders of the National Police and the Local Police. This gathering aimed to thoroughly examine the statistics related to criminal activities that have taken place in the capital of Tenerife during the initial half of this year. The primary takeaway from this meeting was that the municipality “remains a secure city,” as stated by the councillor. Additionally, two specific areas were highlighted where both police forces are enhancing their efforts, particularly regarding thefts and robberies from vehicles.

Concerning thefts, it was noted that incidents often recur annually during the Carnival festivities, with a surge in professional pickpockets arriving from other regions of the country. This remains a matter of vigilant monitoring, with covert operations being implemented; however, tackling this issue in large-scale events proves to be quite challenging.

As for thefts from vehicles, it was observed that many of the reported cases involve hire cars, prompting authorities to arrange targeted police surveillance to deter potential offenders.

Both the mayor and police leaders stressed the importance of continuing to strengthen and adapt security measures to effectively tackle the seasonal “spikes” in criminal activity, which typically arise during the first quarter of the year in the capital of Tenerife.
