The Granadilla de Abona City Council announced a series of initiatives to tackle the issue of housing accessibility within the municipality yesterday. Many of these plans have previously been disclosed, while others will be implemented in the upcoming months. Mayor Jennifer Miranda (PSOE), alongside the Councillor for Community Welfare and Housing, Adán García, and the spokesperson and Councillor for Internal Regime, David Santos, unveiled the measures they intend to undertake to enhance both the availability and affordability of housing in the locality, a key priority for the Granadilla administration since the beginning of their term.
Key initiatives include the construction of new public housing, the regulation of holiday rentals, a request for the designation of a stressed area, and the introduction of subsidies for housing rehabilitation.
The City Council highlighted one of the most ambitious housing schemes of recent decades: the provision of over 350 homes at affordable prices. This includes 59 properties in San Isidro and nearly 300 within Granadilla town, following the resolution of the urban status of Los Hinojeros. Additionally, there are 348 protected homes in San Isidro, whose reparcelling has already received approval. Furthermore, the municipal authorities have disclosed that they will invest nearly 3 million euros towards the acquisition of 30 completed properties, which will be tendered in the coming weeks.
Holiday Rentals
Another initiative from the government involves promoting a regulatory ordinance on holiday rentals. The aim of this regulation is to restrict tourist usage of new properties and to boost the number of homes available for residential leases. In this context, they reiterated the request made to the Government of the Canary Islands to declare the municipality a stressed area. Recently, the southern municipality submitted objections to the procedural document forwarded by the regional Housing Ministry.
Lastly, they announced the completion of the inventory of buildings still under construction, a measure that DIARIO DE AVISOS previously reported and which had been stalled since the property crisis.
The Councillor for Housing, Adán García, informed that the funding for the rehabilitation of homes in precarious conditions has been increased from 70,000 to 150,000 euros. He also revealed the Active Housing Plan, with a budget of nearly 3 million euros aimed at acquiring 15 homes. Additionally, the City Council has developed a manual for action in cases of evictions.
