SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE 3 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) 112 of the Canary Islands Government has attended to 3,970 calls pertaining to incidents of child and youth violence across the archipelago from 2019 until September 2024, as reported by the Deputy Minister of Emergencies and Water, Marcos Lorenzo, during the launch of the ‘Comprehensive Training Days for the Prevention and Action against Child and Youth Violence’, organised by the Clave-A project in collaboration with the non-profit association Sart-Up Corazón Solidario.

This situation underscores the necessity, according to the Deputy Minister of Emergencies, to endorse initiatives like these sessions aimed at “reducing the impact of violence against the child and youth population in the Canary Islands.”

“We must persist in efforts regarding awareness, training, and prevention to avert the recurrence of situations similar to those reported through 112,” he stated.

The purpose of these sessions is to educate professionals from various sectors that may be involved in identifying these cases—such as healthcare, education, emergency services, and law enforcement—equipping them with the essential tools to detect instances of violence promptly and provide adequate support and guidance to victims.

Of the total 3,970 calls received at CECOES 112 from 2019 to September of this year, the largest number, 2,201, pertains to reports of maltreatment, followed by cases of neglect, which accounted for 577 calls, and instances of sexual abuse numbering 384, according to a governmental communiqué.

Additionally, the tally includes reports of harassment, threats, and cyber or telephonic coercion, as well as cases of child pornography and prostitution, as explained by Alexis Moreno, the head of the Las Palmas Operational Room, during his address at these sessions.

Moreno emphasised that 112 Canarias plays a crucial role in the detection chain of such violence, as CECOES serves as the channel to report these incidents and is staffed with trained professionals capable of providing appropriate advice to individuals facing these circumstances and seeking help.
