The Cabildo of Tenerife, during the Government Council meeting on Wednesday, October 2, has sanctioned the awarding of the contract for overseeing the renovation works of the Plaza de La Patrona in Candelaria for an amount exceeding 488,000 euros to the architectural firm Eustaquio Martínez.

Commencement of the works is anticipated before the year’s end, although the definitive date will hinge on the scheduling of the Monitoring Commission. The duration of the works spans 36 months, involving an investment of 16.2 million euros.

The president of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, highlights that the project will encompass an area of roughly 20,000 square metres, which entails work on the promenade and the surrounding areas of the Plaza de la Patrona. “This is a vital and iconic project for the island of Tenerife and the municipality of Candelaria, as the Basilica, recognised as an Asset of Cultural Interest, is an essential stop, serving as a place of worship and pilgrimage for many islanders who honour the Virgin of Candelaria,” remarks Dávila, who added that this initiative will serve as “a model in the revitalisation of public spaces in Tenerife and will enhance the cultural and tourist appeal of Candelaria.”

Additionally, the president of the insular Corporation reminds us that, from the Cabildo of Tenerife, “we have collaborated closely with the Candelaria City Council and the Insular Water Council to ensure this project maintains the area’s identity, conserves iconic elements such as the pilgrim fountain and the Guanche sculpture group, whilst also modernising the infrastructure to meet future needs.”

The undertaking will be executed in three stages, with the first focusing on the promenade, covering 3,431 square metres; the second involves the Plaza de la Patrona, spanning 13,640 square metres; and the third will pertain to the Plaza de los Artesanos, measuring 2,354 square metres.

The project also encompasses enhancements to hydraulic pipelines and drainage systems within this space. Among other developments, the establishment of a ramp building is planned within the Plaza de La Patrona, which will feature a sacred museum, a multifunctional room, and a tourist information office as key functions. The total constructed area will measure 1,073.31 square metres.

The expansive plaza will also be repaved, along with the San Blas promenade and Cueva de los Camellos, while Antón Guanche street is set to be pedestrianised, transforming it into a linear open space at its upper section.

This project, made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Cabildo, the Candelaria City Council, and the Insular Water Council, will ensure the preservation of the pilgrims’ fountain located at the basilica’s entrance, as well as the sculptural group of the Guanches by the sea.
