SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 2 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo of Tenerife, during the Government Council held on Wednesday, has sanctioned the contract for overseeing the renovation works of the Plaza de La Patrona in Candelaria, amounting to over 488,000 euros, awarded to the architecture firm Eustaquio Martinez.

The commencement of the work is expected before year-end, although the exact date will depend on the scheduling of the monitoring committee.

The project consists of a 36-month timeline with a total investment of 16.2 million euros, as noted by the corporation.

The Cabildo’s president, Rosa Dávila, outlines that the renovations will cover approximately 20,000 square metres, including the promenade and the vicinity of the Plaza de la Patrona.

“This is an essential and symbolic project for the island of Tenerife and the municipality of Candelaria, as the Basilica, designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest, is a necessary stop and a site for worship and pilgrimage for numerous locals who honour the Virgin of Candelaria,” explains Dávila. She added that the project will serve as “a benchmark for the revitalisation of public spaces in Tenerife and will enhance Candelaria’s cultural and tourist appeal.”

Furthermore, the president of the insular corporation emphasises that from the Cabildo of Tenerife, efforts have been made “in collaboration” with the Candelaria City Council and the Insular Water Council “to ensure that this project maintains the area’s identity, preserving significant features such as the pilgrims’ fountain and the Guanche sculpture group, while modernising the infrastructure to meet future needs.”

The renovations will unfold in three stages: the first will focus on the promenade, covering 3,431 square metres; the second will involve the Plaza de la Patrona, covering 13,640 square metres, and the third will address the Plaza de los Artesanos, covering 2,354 square metres.

Additionally, the project encompasses enhancements to hydraulic pipelines and sanitation in this area.

Among other developments, the plan includes constructing a ramp building in the Plaza de La Patrona, which will feature a sacred museum, a multifunctional room, and a tourist office as key facilities. The total built area will be 1,073.31 square metres.

The expansive plaza will also receive new paving, along with the San Blas promenade and Cueva de los Camellos, while Antón Guanche street will be transformed into a pedestrianised linear open space at its upper end.

This initiative, made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Cabildo, the Candelaria City Council, and the Insular Water Council, will ensure the preservation of the pilgrims’ fountain located at the basilica entrance, alongside the Guanche sculpture group by the sea.
