Environmental organisations The Trees Speak and Initiatives.10 have rallied for a demonstration against what they term “arboricide,” which, in their view, is perpetuated by the City Council of the capital against the plant species within the city. They have urged citizens to arrive with 8-litre jugs of water to irrigate the Indian laurels along the Rambla de Santa Cruz, specifically between Almeyda and the Navy Command.

This initiative is scheduled for this Saturday at 11:00 a.m., with the assembly point designated at the Almeyda roundabout, as announced yesterday via various social media platforms.

This is not the first occasion that these environmental groups have undertaken protest actions against tree felling or the insufficient irrigation of various species in the city. Their most recent demonstration occurred at the gates of the local town hall, where they read a manifesto advocating for the preservation of trees and requested that the mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, grant clemency to specimens at risk of vanishing.

In response, the Councilor for Public Services, the conservative Carlos Tarife, stated yesterday that “the tree removals are not political choices but technical necessities,” and he reminded that “for every tree pruned, five additional specimens are planted” within the municipality.
