SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 30 September (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cabildo of La Palma has commenced the process to designate the festival of San Miguel Arcangel, the Patron Saint of the Island who celebrates his feast day on 29 September, as an island-wide holiday.
The president of the institution, Sergio Rodríguez, emphasised that this change would enable a larger number of devotees to partake not only in religious observances but also in events that are not only traditional but also rich in ethnographic significance, like the Caballos Fufos, which take place the day prior.
This year, both events coincided with the weekend, resulting in a substantial influx of visitors to the municipality of Tazacorte over the two days. This not only enhances the festival but also bolsters the local economy of the town.
For these reasons, and underlining the importance of the Patron Saint of the Island, efforts are underway to formalise the recognition of 29 September as a holiday, allowing residents from all over La Palma to participate.
At present, there are a total of 14 dates designated throughout the year by autonomous communities, councils, and municipal governments, depending on the region, with each area alternating these dates to reflect their unique traditions, customs, and practices. Consequently, Sergio Rodríguez mentions that the Cabildo of La Palma has initiated the necessary procedures to advocate for the inclusion of San Miguel’s feast day as one of those designated holidays, thereby addressing a request made by the people of Bagañete.
