Arico Greenlights Debt Payment to Unveil Plaza’s Potential

Last Thursday, the plenary session of the Arico City Council sanctioned the payment of an invoice amounting to 150,453.06 euros linked to the electrical installation works in the Plaza de la Villa de Arico, which have been on hold since 2019. The resolution received support from the PSOE, PP, and Arico Somos Todos, while CC opposed it, accusing the government (PSOE and PP) of purported “irregularities.”

This invoice, disbursed by the company Luis Olano Construcciones SL, had been unresolved for several years, obstructing the progress of works in the square, according to the governing team, who describes this payment as “vital to alleviate the situation and ultimately restore a significant public space for the residents.”

Mayor Olivia Delgado, a member of the socialist party, emphasised the importance of this approval yesterday, affirming that the city council is dedicated to resolving an issue that has troubled citizens for years. “With this advancement, we are getting closer to the plaza’s completion,” she remarked.

On the other hand, CC demonstrated their disapproval of the invoice payment, contending that these works had “not been appropriately approved or contracted earlier.” CC spokesperson, Víctor García, asserted that the invoice pertains to works that had previously been questioned when the PSOE brought the matter to court. He maintained that the government team is now planning to pay a “substantial amount without having clarified the works contract,” which he believes should be a priority.

He further criticised the recent allocation of a project worth nearly 300,000 euros to the same company, insinuating “potential irregularities” and casting doubt on the transparency of the process. In CC’s view, this action has been “hand-delivered,” as “the same company tasked with the plaza works has received an emergency award for work in the Las Arenas neighbourhood.”
