Tenerife Cabildo Advocates for Fair Distribution of Migrant Minors

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 27 September (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo of Tenerife has resolved to support a motion put forth by the Canary Islands Federation (Fecai) calling for a fair distribution of unaccompanied migrant minors among all Autonomous Communities that have the necessary resources or are able to facilitate their care promptly.

During today’s Plenary Session, the insular Corporation endorsed a motion demanding that this distribution “be executed immediately, without further delays or justifications”, while also appealing for “empathy and solidarity from the political parties responsible for making these decisions.”

The agreement also highlights the potential to activate new resources right away, noting that “the levels of occupancy in other larger and more populated Autonomous Communities are significantly lower than those in the Canary Islands.”

“The period for political discussion has concluded. It is now time to take action. We all share the responsibility of ensuring that these boys and girls, these young individuals, receive the support they are entitled to,” the document asserts.

Additionally, the document encourages Canarian society to maintain its composure and intelligence, urging a distancing from alarmist and prejudiced narratives.

The resolution adopted by the Cabildo emphasises that “urgent reinforcement of health, social, and educational support measures and resources is essential to ensure these young people receive assistance that meets their needs and is tailored to their circumstances; it is crucial to respect their rights and uphold existing regulations.”

Moreover, it notes that in this collective endeavour to enhance resources and measures, Canarian institutions “have been and will continue to be engaged beyond their capabilities and authority.” “The Island Councils guarantee our utmost commitment to perpetuate our solidarity in carrying out this responsibility,” the text adds.

Given the current saturation of existing care resources in the Islands (despite continuous increases) and the ongoing influx of more young people, the councils urgently urge all political entities within institutions holding legislative and executive authority to “define a new form of solidary response to this situation now, rather than delaying until tomorrow.”

“These young individuals have been without the necessary support for several months now, due to the overwhelming demand on resources available in the Islands. Meanwhile, within the same national territory, there exist resources with sufficient capacity to provide these young people with better assistance,” declares the agreement.
