SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 27th September (EUROPA PRESS) –

This Friday, the Europe Room of the Parliament of the Canary Islands welcomed the official inauguration of the 2024-2025 ecca.edu academic year, marking the commencement of the course in which the Foundation commemorates its 60th anniversary.

Attendees included Ana Oramas, the first vice president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands; Poli Suárez, Minister of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands; José María Segura, general director of ecca.edu; and Juan José Tomillo SJ, representative of the Society of Jesus.

The event concentrated on the hurdles of technological innovation within adult education, a pivotal element in the development of ecca.edu.

The inaugural lecture, presented by Mª Amparo Osorio, managing director of ECCA from 2013 to 2023, was entitled ‘ECCA: Diversity and transformation from my perspective’, reflecting this theme. During her discourse, Osorio underscored the significance of placing students at the core of the mission, which seeks to enhance their educational experience through innovation.

In this regard, the Minister of Education described ECCA as “an institution with unquestionable social roots and a vital role in Education within the Canary Islands”, particularly highlighting its contribution “in literacy and remote training for thousands of individuals who, due to various circumstances, could not or cannot access conventional educational centres.”

Furthermore, he noted the entity’s “inclusive approach”, which is aligned with the Ministry of Education, a partnership that has historically flourished. “Together, we will continue to enlighten education in the Canary Islands,” Suárez affirmed, assuring that “both I and the Government of this land are committed to ongoing collaboration in the future.”

In addition, the general director of ecca.edu reiterated the dedication to equipping Canarian society to “ensure that no one is left behind and that all individuals have access to quality education”. He emphasised that achieving this objective necessitates continued support from the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands.

“This occurs in an educational landscape characterised by digitalisation and perpetual technological advancement, a facet that ECCA has ingrained in its ethos and has been implementing since its establishment, 60 years ago. The latest innovation introduced is Artificial Intelligence, a progression we not only apply in our materials but have also commenced teaching,” Segura elaborated.

The day was highlighted by the presentation of the ECCA 2024 Awards, which acknowledged the contributions of entities and organisations distinguished by their social and educational dedication. In the Corporate Social Responsibility category, the Cajasiete-Pedro Modesto Campos Foundation was honoured for its efforts towards social development within the Canary Islands. Additionally, within the Social Organisation category, the Signo de Vida Tenerife Association was recognised for its support of vulnerable groups on the island.

Alongside these awards, ecca.edu acknowledged the achievements of three students who attained the best academic records from the previous year. Norelsy del Valle Rodríguez Aular was celebrated at the Basic Training level, Sonia García Hernández in Baccalaureate, and Ángel Adeun Cáceres Hernández in Vocational Training.
