Numerous local associations, alongside social and commercial organisations in the southwest area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, have urged the Cabildo to halt the “disproportionately costly” Line 2 of the Tenerife Metropolitan Tram along Avenida de los Hawthorns.
The groups have dispatched a letter of concerns, requesting that the Council nullify the proposed route and seek “the most feasible alternative as a holistic and consensual solution”, while emphasising the importance of social participation and the voices of their representatives.
They clarify that they do not oppose the advancement of alternative and efficient transportation methods, provided that Avenida de Los Majuelos is “preserved” in its existing form for public use and enjoyment.
They rebuff any “invasion, incorporation, or destruction of any event or apparatus” on this avenue.
The letter notes that the tram route from Tincer to Avenida de los Majuelos is estimated to cost approximately 15 million euros.
Moreover, they point out that this project would be “of a limited scope and little utility”, resulting in environmental harm and exacerbated traffic issues.
For the associations, justifying the tram route towards Avenida de los Majuelos based on the construction and environmental report against the route or halt towards Avenida de las Hespérides solely due to projected higher passenger usage is deemed “an institutional dysfunction.”
