La Alborada and the Club for the Third Age are the two senior centers in San Miguel de Abona. They were the first to close due to the pandemic and will now be the last to open. The municipal government announces that they will resume their activity this week. Aware that the elderly are the group most affected by the health crisis at all levels, the City Council tried to meet their needs during this time.

Along these lines, the users of La Alborada received occupational therapy at home, daily, free of charge and with the same caregivers at the center. The users of the Club of the Third Age also had homework tasks and, once the pandemic “gave a truce”, they carried out outdoor activities and excursions, among others.

The mayor of San Miguel, Arturo González, expresses his satisfaction “and great joy” for the reopening of these facilities, “Because our centers are spaces for coexistence and experiences and the pandemic caused their closures, distancing them from their routines from one day to the next.”

Nuria Marrero, the councilor responsible for Social Services, emphasizes that “although this return to everyday life is very positive, we cannot forget where we come from and how much this pandemic has punished our society and, in particular, our elders ».

The reopening occurs with a plan so that the service is provided with the maximum guarantees

It should be noted that while these centers have remained closed, their facilities were subject to adaptation, improvement and maintenance works. For their opening they have an exhaustive contingency plan against covid-19, with the aim that the service is provided “with maximum security and with all guarantees,” says the government.

Popular career

On the other hand, the San Miguel de Abona City Council makes a call to participate in the tenth edition of the Llano del Camello Popular Race, suitable for adults, young people and children from 3 years old. It will take place next Monday, with both sporting and social purposes. Thus, the minors who participate will register through a donation of non-perishable food or hygiene products, which will go to families with fewer resources.

The authorities remind that the effect that the pandemic has on the elderly should not be forgotten

It should be noted that this year there will also be other alternative activities aimed at participants of all ages, such as rural crossfit, fitness, Zumba master class and the performance of DJ Cristian. All programming will be subject to the application of the corresponding anticovid-19 measures.

The race will begin at 10:00 am, with the departure of the children and young people, it will continue at 11:30 with the female category and will conclude with the male category, at 12:00. The registration period is now open and can be done through the digital link www.canaryrun.com.
