SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 27 September (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Department of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Canary Islands Government announced on Friday the allocation of 125.5 million euros from Next Generation funds aimed at the production of renewable energy in the Canary Islands.

This funding will ultimately contribute to the decarbonisation efforts within the Canary Islands and forms part of the Sustainable Islands Strategy (programmes 1, 2 and 3).

Specifically, these funds will be directed towards achieving energy self-sufficiency in public administration, fostering the development of energy communities, and promoting the decarbonisation of the industrial sector, as outlined in a statement from the Ministry.

The regional advisor, Mariano Hernández Zapata, clarified that the cumulative outcome of these three programmes will result in an addition of 109 MW of renewable generation, a significant initiative that “facilitates the increased integration of clean energy within the Canary Islands, thereby progressing towards the targets set by the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) of 58% renewables by 2030.”

In terms of the administration of these funds, a top priority of the Ministry, Zapata highlighted that they are meeting their “emergency plan and the established timelines”, while also praising the effective collaboration with the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), which oversees these funds under the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO).

This development, alongside other instances such as the expedited concessions and payments of the Self-consumption and Moves III programmes or the adjustments made to the foundational guidelines of certain programmes to facilitate their management, “demonstrates the announcement to unblock the more than 23,000 pending files,” he emphasised.

Furthermore, the advisor indicated that work will persist on new funding lines and reminded of those recently initiated, which pertain to the utilisation of already developed areas for photovoltaic generation, the electrification of the nautical sector, and the establishment of energy communities.

In the case of energy communities, a total budget of 24 million euros is allocated, with the application period remaining open until 2 November.

The advisor further noted that applications for Moves III “remain open following an extension of deadlines until December of this year.”

He also reminded citizens that for information regarding this and other subsidies, “they can visit the Green Offices of the Canary Islands, where they will receive essential details and be directed to the relevant specialised services of the Department of Ecological Transition and Energy for each particular case.”
