Santa Cruz City Council Seeks to Revamp Club’s Institutional Framework

The forthcoming plenary session of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council is set to endorse an institutional motion, put forward by socialist councillors Patricia Hernández and Andrés Martín, aimed at addressing the institutional circumstances surrounding Club Deportivo Tenerife. This initiative calls upon the club’s proprietors to “reassess the existing institutional situation, examining suitable measures to achieve this while considering the club’s substantial membership when strategising for its present and future,” as well as “promoting and/or backing the essential initiatives to ensure that the representative club of this capital reinstates the values of its century-old heritage and operates in a transparent and exemplary manner.” It is expected that this measure will be accorded unanimous approval without discussion from the other factions in the capital’s council.

The municipal socialist group asserts that “the current predicament of CD Tenerife is dire,” emphasising that “a change in direction is essential to restore normalcy.” “CD Tenerife must be under competent management that guarantees a future in which its supporters can take pride,” the Santa Cruz PSOE emphasises, also noting that “there exists a profound affection for ‘Tete’ in our city, which necessitates that the City Council takes a definitive stance. Whatever transpires in Tenerife has ramifications in our city and influences our external image. No event, for instance, attracts more than 15,000 attendees every fortnight.”

Given these circumstances, they argue that “the current atmosphere is quite volatile, especially with a protest against the club’s ownership planned for this Sunday, September 22. In light of this predicament, particularly with the looming threat of relegation to the First Federation following a poor start to the League, the council must side with the supporters.” They assert, “It is now imperative; the cry from Tenerife fans is that the current owners relinquish control of the entity. All of us must play our part to ensure a transition that reinstates utmost diligence and rationality in management,” the socialist group insists, recognising that the sporting establishment is enduring a situation “that nobody deserves, least of all Santa Cruz. We must don the CD Tenerife jersey and, as public representatives of the community, advocate for a cherished emblem of the city,” the Socialist Party in the Santa Cruz council voices.

Bermúdez also calls for Garrido’s exit

José Manuel Bermúdez, Mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, expressed his regret and condemnation regarding “the situation that tarnishes the image and reputation of our cherished team,” he stated yesterday through his social media platforms. “For many residents of Tenerife, CD Tenerife is far more than a SAD. The majority shareholder should withdraw from the institution considering the club’s best interests, allowing ownership to revert to shareholders who “truly resonate with the colours,” under the leadership of the board and its president,” he added.
