A new entity was born in Tenerife “for the protection of users of residences for the elderly and people with disabilities.” They have the sponsorship of the Common Deputy, Rafael Yanes, and it is called the Platform of Relatives and Users of Residences. They request, among other things, “a better functioning of these centers.” Ofelia Aguiar, Sara Rodríguez and Paula Romero are, respectively, founder, member and person in charge of the group that demands “the improvement of the social health care system in Tenerife, as well as the protection of the rights of the elderly and dependents in the centers.”
They assure that “the waiting times for the recognition of the dependency and the obtaining of places are much higher than the average of the State, and that there is a very important deficit”. They even point out that “some people are called to offer one after they have passed away.”
Value that «We want to make visible the situation of the residences and that public administrations know that there is an association that defends the resident ”. They add, in this sense, that “we ask that they take us into account when making decisions.”
Yanes highlights that the Extraordinary Report he presented concludes that “we have one inspector for every 46 residences, while the Balearic Islands, for example, have one for every four.”
The Platform points out the importance of replacing the macro residences with other small ones, divided into living units of up to 15 users. In addition, it calls for the involvement of city councils for construction and financing, as well as so that “business is not done with dependent people on the Island.”
