The La Laguna City Council has recently identified a second void beneath the Arenisco promenade at Hidalgo Point. This cavity surfaced during the concluding phase of restorative work on a cave that was undertaken this month, prompted by the severe waves that impacted the municipality’s coastline at the start of September.

This latest issue, manifesting as a vertical hollow approximately three metres deep, will be incorporated into the emergency initiative that had already received approval from the City Council, which has a financial allocation of 420,000 euros.

The councillor responsible for this department, Ángel Chinea, indicated that the company engaged for this initiative is currently conducting further examinations to eliminate any other potential issues that could compromise the safety of individuals using this pedestrian path.

The councillor elaborated that “all previously conducted work associated with the cave will remain unaffected but will be augmented by new operations aimed at addressing this second cavity that requires swift resolution.” Ángel Chinea also emphasised the significance of these undertakings, as both cavities are positioned close to the sewage collector, posing a risk of pipe failure and potential spillage.

The financial provision made by the La Laguna City Council for this urgent work was 420,000 euros; however, this unforeseen complication will necessitate an adjustment to this figure. To discuss this matter, a meeting is set to take place between the Council and the Tenerife Island Council, an entity that has recently indicated its support for these essential works aimed at enhancing the entire coastal area of Punta del Hidalgo.

Ángel Chinea, the Councillor for Works and Infrastructures at La Laguna City Council, has already reached out to representatives from the Fishermen’s Guild and the Punta del Hidalgo Residents’ Association to brief them on the amended project and the scheduling of these emergency procedures, which will entail cordoning off the promenade to restrict pedestrian access in an area susceptible to collapse. In the coming weeks, a site visit will be conducted involving all parties concerned.
