Tenerife Council Reclassifies ‘Cuna del Alma’ as an Adeje Initiative with Legal Support

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 25 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Vice President and Councillor for Tourism of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Lope Afonso, has on Wednesday contextualised the construction project for the tourist development ‘Cuna del Alma’ near the small port of Adeje as an initiative from the City Council within its planning framework, which also possesses legal rights held by the landowners.

“It is not a matter of personal preference or taste; everyone is entitled to their opinion regarding this type of development,” he expressed at the press conference following the Government Council meeting, where he reiterated that the planning cannot be altered “arbitrarily” and that the Cabildo, in any situation, is dedicated to a tourism model “that honours sustainability values” and “equally includes” local residents in its development.

In this regard, he noted that the designation of part of the small port of Adeje as a Site of Geological Interest by the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME) now requires assessment to determine if it necessitates any adjustments to the planning and the anticipated project.

Afonso indicated that ‘Cuna del Alma’ has been in progress for several years without direct engagement from the Council, which, in any event, acknowledges the presence of “criteria for legal certainty that are not open to political interpretation.”

“The council cannot and must not intervene in this case unless the project’s development falls within the sectoral competence that the council may possess. Indeed, as we have previously demonstrated, we will disclose the application of these competencies with complete transparency,” he stated.

Recently, the City Council resolved to issue the urban planning licence for ‘Cuna del Alma’ amounting to 43.2 million euros in an initial phase that encompasses the construction of 314 accommodation places across 90 units.
