In the northern region, the darker shades are highlighted by black sand and volcanic features like rocks. Conversely, the beaches in southern Tenerife are characterised by their golden sands, some displaying greyish or light brown tones, giving them a tropical essence.

Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that the Canary Islands boast a total of 54 beaches and 4 marinas as of 2024, all of which have received the Blue Flag certification. Specifically, 16 beaches in Tenerife hold this environmental accolade, and among the ones listed below are notable examples such as Camisón and Duque, which have achieved this prestigious quality rating.

1. El Medano Beach

El Médano beach is one of the most well-known in Tenerife, perfect for indulging in water sports like surfing, windsurfing or kitesurfing, thanks to the area’s favourable weather conditions. It also attracts visitors seeking a peaceful day at the beach, despite its reputation for consistent winds.

Additionally, it features a lovely promenade ideal for enjoying the coastline and an extensive selection of eateries to relish a delightful meal by the sea, ranging from local dining spots to brunch options and international cuisine such as Mexican or Lebanese.

2. Abama Beach

Situated in Guía de Isora, this beach showcases the distinctive golden sand typical of the southern Tenerife coast.

On this compact beach, just 100 meters in length, you can experience one of the most stunning sunsets, framed by the beauty of La Gomera on the horizon. In essence, a breakwater ensures a tranquil and inviting environment, ideal for swimming.

The beach is also notable for its proximity to the hotel of the same name. A free car park is available nearby, although it tends to fill up during the summer, which can make parking challenging.

Finally, to access the beach, visitors must walk alongside the hotel and descend a set of stairs or a short path, as the funicular is reserved exclusively for hotel guests.

3. Diego Hernandez Beach

Commonly referred to by locals as the hippie beach or hippie cove, Diego Hernández beach captivates visitors with its stunning golden sand, crystal-clear waters and enchanting views of the island of La Gomera.

This secluded cove is generally tranquil, and it is advisable to visit during low tide for more sand available to lay your towel, else you may find yourself resting on the rocky surfaces.

However, being an unspoiled beach, it lacks facilities such as sunbeds or umbrellas, further establishing it as one of the most desirable beaches in southern Tenerife and a known spot for nudism.

4. Camison Beach

Camisón beach, located in Arona in the southern part of Tenerife, is an excellent destination for families with children thanks to the breakwater, which ensures a calm atmosphere for swimming.

Numerous hotels are situated nearby, making it an ideal location for a family day at the beach.

The beach boasts excellent facilities, making it a sought-after destination for tourists. Additionally, it features wheelchair accessibility, showers, along with a service for renting sunbeds and parasols.

Moreover, its 350 metres of golden sand are recognised with a Blue Flag, a source of pride for the beaches in Tenerife.

5. La Tejita Beach

Recognised as one of the most picturesque beaches in the southern region of Tenerife, it is situated in El Médano, Granadilla de Abona, and is framed by the volcanic structure known as Red Mountain.

Stretching one kilometre in length and 30 metres in width, this area has been designated as a protected natural site, showcasing one of the island’s most stunning beaches, a perfect spot for immersing oneself in nature. Furthermore, nudism is allowed across the beach, although it is predominantly practised at one extremity.

Additionally, this beach attracts many visitors interested in engaging in water sports, including surfing, bodyboarding, and windsurfing, primarily because of its favourable wind and wave conditions throughout most of the year. The coastal village of El Médano is the host for the renowned World Windsurfing Championship by the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) at El Cabezo beach.

Consequently, it is an ideal choice for a family outing, stretching over 300 metres in length. Notably, it is recognised as an “Accessible Beach”, featuring facilities that enhance access for individuals with mobility impairments, including ramps and accessible pathways.

The waters at Las Vistas are gentle, and there are lifeguards present, making the area safer for families with children. The beach also provides showers, restrooms, and the option to hire sunbeds, although relaxing on the golden sands is equally inviting.

This region also boasts a promenade that links to the beaches of El Camison and Los Cristianos, perfect for enjoying the coastal scenery.
