SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 23 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government Council of the Canary Islands has today approved an increase in funding for several budget lines within the Ministry of Social Welfare to fulfil commitments and obligations concerning expenses related to unaccompanied foreign minors, as well as the implementation of judicial measures for young offenders, totalling 24,127,199.22 euros.

Specifically, the Canarian Executive has sanctioned 18,894,493.27 euros to address the expenses associated with the care of unaccompanied foreign minors and an additional 4,944,705.95 euros for the programme aimed at executing judicial measures for juvenile offenders led by the IDEO Foundation. This also includes financing agreements with various organisations focused on carrying out judicial measures mandated by the courts, which currently lack the necessary funds to meet the established commitments.

Moreover, the budget assigned to the expenses of the IDEO Foundation has been enhanced by 288,000 euros.

At present, the Canary Islands are home to over 5,500 unaccompanied foreign minors, along with 81 emergency shelters. Since August of the previous year, a state of emergency has been declared to expedite administrative processes and ensure adequate care for these minors.
