COAG Canarias Calls Dismissal of Agriculture Director a Major Mistake, Urges Quintero for Transparency

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 20 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

COAG Canarias has labelled the recent dismissal of Javier Gutiérrez Taño, the Director General of Agriculture for the Government of the Canary Islands, as “absurd”, particularly as it occurs “at a crucial time” for the primary sector in the islands without an appointed successor.

Consequently, the organisation has addressed a letter to the regional Minister for Agriculture, Narvay Quintero, urging him to provide “clear and transparent” explanations regarding “the grounds for this unforeseen dismissal” since Gutiérrez Taño’s performance had been commendable.

“The methods employed and the reasons provided thus far to account for this termination do not justify COAG Canarias’ stance, especially during this critical period for the sector, which faces numerous challenges in vital and intricate areas such as the management of European CAP allocations and the ongoing crisis within the banana industry,” the association remarked in a statement.

In their opinion, the former director general was “in constant communication with the sector, considering its diversity and various sensitivities and interests, and continually enhancing his knowledge and capability to tackle the numerous matters within his jurisdiction.”

Additionally, in terms of issues specifically related to the banana sector, “he proved to be one of the most ardent proponents of a new regulatory framework which, let us not forget, received unanimous support from all political parties in the Parliament of the Canary Islands,” he added.
